Hudson Public House - First Impressions

I’ve driven past the corner of 15th Ave NE and Lake City Way at least three times a week since moving last August and never noticed Hudson Public House until recently.  Maybe it was the addition of a small clapboard sign?  Whatever it was, my curiosity was piqued.  I've been quietly wishing to find more higher-end bars like those in my old Capitol Hill neighborhood.  Maybe Hudson would be what I was looking for?  The answer: yes and no.

Hudson looks beautiful.  Aesthetically, it easily fits in with others gastropubs like Smith or Spur.  This isn't a great shock since owner, Seth Howard’s other restaurant is Collins Pub in Pioneer Square.  Collins is a great space with a solid menu and long tap list in what otherwise is the land of dollar beer, dive bars. Knowing Howard has the talent to build a good bar in less than appealing environs may have built up my expectations a bit too much.

On a recent Friday, my boyfriend and I finally made our way to Hudson.  Our initial first impression definitely was not a good start.  As many of the Yelp reviews acknowledge, the place seems understaffed and the servers overwhelmed.   When requesting a different table we got an icy response from our harried waiter.  The service continued to be less than stellar...and so was the food.

While I give credit to the diverse and intriguing menu choices, our dinner ultimately missed the mark.  The steak I ordered was cooked perfectly but the accompanying kale seemed to be steamed or somehow sauteed in absolutely no oil or seasonings that could be tasted.  Also, the entire plate was lukewarm.  My boyfriend got the lamb shank in mole; a decidedly bold move given our shaky start.  To our surprise, it was incredibly flavorful however also cold. No matter how great the dish, if it's cold, and it isn't gazpacho or a salad, it doesn't taste good.

We finished up our meal with dessert of banana beignets.  This selection was a guaranteed fail for me since I've lived in New Orleans but the boyfriend was still adamant about trying it out.  Though not remotely being a beignet, the more aptly described banana doughnut holes were tasty fried goodness.

Despite this lackluster meal, I'm more than willing to give Hudson a second chance.  The large selections of draft beers are definitely notable and I'm always looking for a new brunch spot.  Maybe a mid-week visit will improve my opinion? I hope so.

it's also too loud in there. I'm not sure I'll go back any time soon.
